![]() The gameplay for Vanguard Princess is entirely about the fighting. The DLC describes itself on the Steam store page as featuring “ uncensored DLC demanded by longtime Vanguard Princess fans.” Take that as you will. Visually speaking the game is very reminiscent of classic arcade fighters, but with a very Japanese flair. Half of the characters choose to wear little to no clothing, and there is even a director’s cut out which you can download for free. When attack flashes and animations flood the screen it’s even easier to suddenly lose your location, costing you valuable seconds which can make a difference on higher difficulties. Unfortunately however even with the distinct appearance when in combat it becomes very easy to lose place of your character between them, the support characters, and the crowds of other generic looking NPCs in the background. All sprites are animated at a good framerate, and visually differ from one another. Credit where it is due, the character animations are tight during combat. This includes distant backgrounds, closer background NPCs and the foreground player characters and supports. The game started life as a freeware download created using Fighter Maker 2nd which pretty much does what it says on the tin. Then again, I suppose you’d have a pretty short game if that was the case (not that it was long to begin with). Wouldn’t it make more sense to team up and stop this threat together? Then you’d have all the time in the world to pursue these other problems without the imminent destruction of humankind looming over your head. Some are searching for a place to belong, or trying to find a lost sibling, but it’s hard to emotionally invest in the story when your main objective is beating up other forcibly gifted girls that supposedly have the same inclination to save the earth as you do, for no reason. Now stop me if you’ve heard this before, using her powers the original girl breaks out of custody, vows to destroy all mankind in the name of revenge, and now the young girls granted with powers must stop her.Įach of the girls you can play as have their own motives and reasons for going out to stop the threat to earth, however the reasons are mostly generic and without much backstory and as a result they hold no weigh. These experiments cause a global cosmic shockwave that somehow grant a number of other young girls magical powers too (but no boys or older women cause that would be dumb). “ Experiments” from “ The Government” are performed on a Girl gifted with magical powers (because of reasons that I won’t go into to avoid spoilers). The storyline is as vague as it is unimaginative. If you put all these together, duct taping them with reckless abandonment and tacking on a mediocre storyline you’d get something akin to Princess Vanguard. As is impractically skimpy clothing and over the top spectacle combat. Girls with magical powers are a common occurrence within Japanese otaku culture and games.
